SEEKONK -- The town's recreation landscape saw more debate than action this week, as a long-running fight over a proposed multi-field recreation project dominated public comment at Town Hall.
TOWN -- At the Sept. 30 Select Board meeting, multiple residents pressed the board to move forward with the Medeiros Farm Committee's project, which speakers said was planned to include rectangular playing fields usable for soccer, lacrosse and other sports. Resident Joe Novenson told the board that the committee's master plan had originally designated both the eastern and western halves of the Medeiros Farm property for active recreation, totaling four playing fields, but said the board's June 24 vote to ban active recreation west of Lincoln Street would eliminate two of those fields. He and other speakers, including Jeannie Stocker, argued the board should proceed with a signed design contract rather than a separately bid traffic study. A separate speaker raised the town's ongoing discussion of seeking payment in lieu of taxes from Wheeler School, noting the school currently allows public use of its track when not in use by the school and said a more cooperative approach with the school could eventually open access to its pool as well.
YOUTH LEAGUES -- Seekonk Youth Soccer's inaugural Baby Geese Academy, a six-week program for Pre-K players run with Resendes Soccer Academy coaches, continues alongside Fall Rec games on Saturday mornings at 9:15 a.m. at the Cole Street Fields at Martin School, running through Oct. 24, according to the Seekonk Youth Soccer website.
